Canada Should Slap 100% Tariff on Teslas, Says Chrystia Freeland
Former Canadian deputy Prime Minister (and Finance Minister), Chrystia Freeland, who is currently running for leader of the Liberal Party, says the country slap a 100% tariff on Tesla vehicles, if President Donald Trump proceeds with his 25% tariff on the country.
Starting February 1, Trump has said Canada and Mexico will face a 25% tariff and China with 10%. The U.S. wants Canada and Mexico to secure their borders and stop fentanyl from being smuggled into America.
If Donald Trump slaps 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, we must hit back—dollar for dollar—starting with 100% tariffs on all Tesla vehicles and U.S. wine, beer, and spirits. We must protect Canadian workers and businesses. https://t.co/OX0nImM39w pic.twitter.com/FWFwWdbQ9X

Now, Freeland has said, “If Donald Trump slaps 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, we must hit back—dollar for dollar—starting with 100% tariffs on all Tesla vehicles and U.S. wine, beer, and spirits. We must protect Canadian workers and businesses.”
Tesla vehicles are wildly popular in Canada. Starting tomorrow, Tesla will be increasing prices in Canada by up to $9,000, due to foreign exchange rates. For Freeland’s push for climate change, it seems odd to slap a 100% tariff on the most popular EV maker.
Not sure why she is targeting Tesla, when there’s plenty of other U.S. automakers as well. But most U.S. automakers produce vehicles in Canada. Maybe Freeland is trying to troll Musk to get some attention?
