Tesla vehicles need a better way to clean external cameras when you’re driving in bad weather. This needs to be solved in order for Robotaxis to work, which will be based entirely on vision.
When Tesla owner Chuck Cook said to the Tesla AI team on X, “While I agree cleaning cameras while supervised is definitely something we need to consider .. having an official post from @Tesla_AI about cleaning our own cameras is a bit concerning. You have a plan for this right? Unsupervised can’t have customers wiping cameras.”
That’s when the @Tesla_AI team replied, “On a more serious note, a more comprehensive cleaning solution is being worked on.”
We don’t know what Tesla has in store, but special coatings on external camera lenses will only go so far when there’s constant sprays of rain and more (not all Tesla owners live in California). We need camera washers to fight more than just water droplets, but also salt and other road debris.
What do you think is the solution to keep cameras clean? Some sort of spray arm that blasts camera lenses?
