Trump’s Transportation Nominee Pushes for EV Drivers to Pay Road Fees

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Transportation Department, Sean Duffy, believes electric vehicle (EV) drivers should help pay for road upkeep, a cost traditionally covered by taxes on gasoline and diesel.

Speaking to the Senate Committee during his confirmation hearing, Duffy pointed out that EV owners don’t pay fuel taxes, the main source of federal highway repair funds. “They should contribute to road upkeep, but finding the right method is a challenge,” he said, according to Reuters.

Some states already charge fees for EVs, while Congress has avoided raising fuel taxes for decades, relying on general tax revenue to cover shortfalls. Of course, any EV fees would apply to all owners, including Tesla and more. With Tesla CEO Elon Musk having direct access to Trump, we are wondering if the latter will have any sway in the matter.

What do you think? Should EV drivers pay road fees?

The nominee is mistaken in this manner, as Sarah, the author, points out that much of the country overpays on taxes and fees in an EV.
