SpaceX Gives Free Starlink for LA Wildfire Recovery

SpaceX and Starlink are stepping up to assist those affected by the Los Angeles area wildfires by offering one month of free internet service.

The initiative aims to support recovery efforts in impacted areas (via @BLKMDL3), according to an email sent to Starlink customers.

For residents whose service addresses are within the wildfire-affected regions, Starlink is providing the opportunity to reactivate service. Even if you no longer have your Starlink kit or it isn’t functioning, you can still benefit if your equipment is available.

To activate the free service:

  • Sign in to your Starlink account.
  • Click “Manage” under “Your Starlinks.”
  • Select “Activate Service” and choose your plan.

Starlink has also applied a credit to accounts matching the amount of any previous service plan, though unused credits may expire.

As of January 9, 2025, Los Angeles is grappling with multiple devastating wildfires, with the Palisades Fire being the most destructive, having scorched over 19,000 acres and destroyed thousands of structures while remaining 0% contained.

At least five fatalities have been reported, with the death toll expected to rise. Over 130,000 residents are under evacuation orders, and the fires have spread to multiple neighborhoods including Pacific Palisades, Hollywood Hills, and Altadena, fueled by dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds.

Firefighters, numbering over 7,500, are battling the blazes amidst poor air quality, with some areas like Altadena experiencing hazardous air conditions.

Yesterday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said SpaceX would also be giving free Starlink terminals to affected areas in LA as well. Fast-moving fires
