One NZ Launches Satellite Texting Powered by Starlink
One NZ has launched Satellite TXT, a new service that allows customers with eligible phones and plans to send and receive text messages from remote areas across New Zealand.
This being made possible thanks to SpaceX’s Starlink’s Direct to Cell tech, which brings coverage in places where traditional cell towers can’t reach—whether you’re on a farm, on the road, in the mountains, or on the water.
The service is designed to offer an extra layer of connectivity and safety, especially for those in remote locations. However, One NZ recommends carrying a personal locator beacon for emergencies during outdoor trips.
Initially, sending or receiving texts may take longer—around 3 minutes in many cases, but up to 10 minutes or more as the system rolls out. Delivery times are expected to improve as more satellites are launched and the service matures.
The ability to use Satellite TXT depends on having an eligible phone, being in an area with a clear line of sight to the sky, and the availability of a satellite overhead.
Currently, only a small number of phones are compatible, with more being added over time. Customers will receive a text message when the service becomes available on their device.
Satellite TXT is included in eligible One NZ mobile plans at no extra cost. To check your phone compatibility or plan eligibility, customers are encouraged to visit the One NZ website or use the My One NZ app.
Before heading out of traditional cell coverage, ensure your phone and plan are eligible for satellite TXTs. To connect successfully, find open spaces with a clear line of sight to the sky, avoiding obstructions like buildings, trees, or structures. Look for “One NZ SpaceX” on your phone’s network banner, which confirms a satellite connection. Short gaps may occur, but satellites typically return within minutes. Use your phone’s TXT app to send messages and check the time stamp to confirm delivery. If the TXT fails, ensure you have clear visibility of the sky and try again.
