Tesla’s Cybertruck Horn Upgrade Explained by Lead Engineer
Tesla’s Cybertruck recently introduced a new “Superhorn” system, replacing the traditional trumpet-style horn found in earlier models. This was sent an an in-app update option in the Tesla mobile app. It’s a change that’s irreversible and now we know why.
The update, detailed by Wes Morrill, Tesla’s Cybertruck Lead Engineer, highlights the evolution of the vehicle’s horn and sound system to better align with the truck’s futuristic design and functionality.
The old horn, a conventional trumpet horn mounted in the front bumper, has been phased out in favor of the new horn, dubbed the “Superhorn.” The Superhorn, located in the front fascia near the passenger-side wheel, is a powerful speaker that also supports functions like Tesla’s Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) and the Boombox feature (available when parked).
A second PWS speaker is mounted near the driver-side rear wheel, exclusively for pedestrian alerts and Boombox sounds. The engineer explained that once Tesla received regulatory approval to implement the Superhorn, new Cybertrucks began producing the distinct “BRRTTT” sound instead of the traditional “MEEEP.” This transition eliminated the need for the older trumpet horn, which is no longer included in newer models.
Earlier Cybertrucks, manufactured before the Superhorn approval, are equipped with both the traditional trumpet horn and the Superhorn. However, Tesla has clarified that downgrades to the previous horn setup are unlikely, as the older horn is a standalone component that doesn’t communicate with the vehicle’s controller.
The Superhorn, resembling a speaker, is visually distinct from the older trumpet horn, and its integration reflects Tesla’s ongoing efforts to innovate vehicle functionality and design. Great to see Tesla was future-proofing the Cybertruck and included both the old horn and speaker. Looks like its bet paid off.
