The Ontario government in Canada is teaming up with SpaceX’s Starlink to provide high-speed satellite internet to 15,000 homes and businesses that currently lack good internet access, focusing on rural, remote, and northern areas.
This new service, called Ontario Satellite Internet (ONSAT), is set to launch in June 2025. The project will cost $100 million CAD ($71 million US).
This program aims to address areas in Ontario where other internet options, like fiber or wireless connections, aren’t practical. Details on how to sign up will be available in spring 2025. The initiative is part of a broader $4 billion investment by Ontario to make sure every part of the province has reliable internet access by the end of 2025.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a network of low-Earth orbit satellites to provide broadband internet that can handle streaming, gaming, video calls, and more. Ontario has already spent about $2.5 billion on over 270 internet and cellular projects, connecting over 100,000 homes so far, with plans to reach 450,000 more by 2025.
