During Tesla’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the possibility that the company’s Hardware 3 (HW3) may fall short of achieving unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD).
If that occurs, Musk assured customers that Tesla will offer free computer upgrades to vehicles equipped with HW3.
“There is a slight chance that the capability of Tesla’s hardware 3 will be insufficient to reach unsupervised FSD. If that’s the case, we’ll take care of those that bought HW3, we’ll upgrade the computers for free,” Musk said.
Musk said HW3 systems are designed to be upgradeable and it’s an easy switch, while the existing cameras are still capable.
Moreso, this will ensure that a massive owner fleet of Model 3 and Model Y owners will be able to use their HW3 cars as Robotaxis. This is a great positive sign for HW3/AI3 owners, as their cars will remain relevant and upgradeable. This also means those with older vehicles will see their residual values go up, as their cars on HW3 remain totally capable of running unsupervised FSD!
