Nuevo León Halts Roadworks for Tesla’s Giga Mexico
The Government of Nuevo León has paused road construction projects that were part of the agreement with Tesla for the Gigafactory in Santa Catarina, according to Hernán Villarreal, Secretary of Mobility and Urban Planning, reports Milenio (via @Tslachan).
This announcement comes two days after Governor Samuel García acknowledged that the future of the factory remains uncertain.
The halted projects include bridges and access roads intended for Tesla employees. Villarreal explained that while essential roadworks are continuing, such as the expansion of the Monterrey-Saltillo highway, projects specifically tied to the Gigafactory will not proceed until Tesla makes a final decision.
The Gigafactory’s future has been in question since October 2023, when Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed concerns due to potential tariffs on Mexican-made vehicles, should Donald Trump win the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Musk confirmed in July that the project would be on hold until after the election.
Governor García remains optimistic about the region’s attractiveness for investment, highlighting the success of companies like Kia, Navistar, and BYD, and stating that Nuevo León is a major player in global supply chains. However, the final decision on Tesla’s plant remains pending.
