Rivian Says Interior Cameras are Coming, Details Privacy Changes
Rivian has unveiled a new “Privacy Hub” to provide customers with a centralized location for information on the company’s data practices and privacy rights.
The announcement, shared through an email to customers obtained by Tesla North, highlights recent updates and upcoming changes to Rivian’s Data Privacy Notice, which will take effect on November 1, 2024.
The Privacy Hub includes resources such as frequently asked questions, privacy notices, and a form for privacy rights requests, allowing customers to better understand and control their data usage. Rivian outlined several new features and changes related to data privacy:
- Interior Camera in Gen 2 Vehicles: Starting with model year 2025, Rivian vehicles will include an interior camera in the rearview mirror. This camera is turned off by default, and customers can choose to enable it for safety system development. Rivian stated that it does not associate these images with specific customers or vehicles for product development.
- Gear Guard Live Cam: The new Gear Guard Live Cam feature lets customers view live video from their parked Rivian vehicles, check surroundings via the Rivian app, and respond to alarm notifications in real-time. Rivian emphasized that the video feed is end-to-end encrypted, and the company does not have access to these recordings.
- Charging Partnerships: Rivian has expanded its compatibility with third-party charging partners, allowing seamless charging sessions while protecting user privacy. While Rivian and its partners can see session details like location and energy consumption, Rivian does not share contact information unless provided directly through the partner’s app.
- Marketing and Communications: Rivian will enhance its marketing efforts by collecting additional demographic and interest-based data to better personalize offers and communications. Limited personal data may be shared with third parties to support these efforts, but customers can opt out of such sharing by submitting a request through Rivian’s Privacy Rights Request form.
Tesla vehicles also have interior cabin cameras, installed above the rear view mirror. This camera monitors driver behaviour and will send warnings if it detects you being distracted.
Rivian also reminded customers of their options regarding data sharing and privacy, such as choosing whether to share location data or images from their vehicles. The company does not share identifiable driving data with third parties without customer consent and only shares data with insurance companies when directed or required by law.
The changes to Rivian’s Data Privacy Notice will go into effect on November 1, 2024. For more details, customers can access the new Privacy Hub on Rivian’s website.
