Tesla FSD 12.5 Compared: HW3 vs. HW4 Road Test [VIDEOS]

In a recent comparison of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 12.5 on Hardware 3 (HW3) and Hardware 4 (HW4), Tesla owners Zack (@BLKMDL3) and James Locke (@arctechinc) tested the systems’ performance on unprotected left turns (UPLs) and speed bumps, revealing varied results.

Tesla recently started rolling out FSD 12.5 to HW3 vehicles, after a month delay to accommodate for the older hardware. A wide release has yet to happen.

During the UPL test, Zack noted that his HW3-equipped 2019 Model 3 (FSD 12.5.1.5 via software version 2024.26.20) performed well, cautiously creeping forward and taking the first safe opportunity to proceed. That’s what everyone would want for an autonomous system.

In contrast, HW4 on the 2024 Model 3 (FSD 12.5.1.3 via software version 2024.26.10) hesitated despite clear traffic, requiring manual intervention to continue (he had to press the pedal). Zack acknowledged that this might be an isolated incident, suggesting more trials are needed.

When tackling speed bumps, both hardware versions struggled, particularly with block-style partial speed bumps. Zack’s HW3 slowed down only for the second of three speed bumps, while HW4 exhibited odd behavior, slowing down after already crossing the first bump but ignoring the others.

As for auto set speed, Zack observed that HW4 tends to drive faster than HW3, which often stays below the speed limit.
