Tesla Fixes Hood Latch Issue with Software Update for 1.8M Cars
Tesla has issued a voluntary safety recall for 1,850,363 vehicles, including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, due to a defect in the hood latch assembly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) assigned the recall number 24V-554.
The recall affects 2013-2024 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, 2017-2024 Model 3, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles. The defect involves a hood latch produced in China, which may fail to detect an open hood condition and prevent driver notification, posing a safety risk.
Tesla began investigating customer complaints in March 2024 and found that the latch switch could deform, preventing notification of an open hood. Higher occurrence rates were noted in China compared to Europe and North America.
Out of caution, Tesla decided to recall affected vehicles on July 17, 2024. An over-the-air software remedy was released on June 18, 2024, and production vehicles received an update on July 15, 2024, to address the issue. Now that’s the power of over-the-air software updates.
The recall will begin notifying owners on September 22, 2024. No crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported related to this defect.
