WestJet, Telus Partner with Starlink for Inflight Wi-Fi
WestJet and Telus have announced the initial phase of a strategic alliance to improve the inflight experience for WestJet passengers. This partnership will introduce high-speed, free internet provided by Telus and powered by Starlink, marking a significant advancement in onboard connectivity.
“By partnering with Telus, we are redefining standards in the Canadian airline industry with Starlink’s groundbreaking inflight connectivity,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer.
WestJet is one of two major airlines in Canada, while Telus is one of three big telecom players in the country.
In the near future, the partnership will unveil additional exclusive perks for WestJet Rewards members and Telus customers.
“The future of inflight entertainment and connectivity has arrived, and we are thrilled to work with WestJet to elevate the flying experience for our guests, adding more value for WestJet Rewards members and Telus customers,” said Zainul Mawji, Executive Vice-President and President, Telus Consumer Solutions.
WestJet is set to be the largest North American airline and the first commercial Boeing 737 operator to utilize Starlink’s advanced technology. Chosen for its ability to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency internet, Starlink will enable passengers to stream videos and play online games seamlessly.
The new connectivity platform is expected to launch by the end of 2024, with installation on WestJet’s narrow-body fleet completed by 2025 and wide-body aircraft by 2026. Access will be complimentary for WestJet Rewards members.
Recently, Starlink announced they had surpassed 400,000 active subscribers in Canada. Free inflight Wi-Fi, but you have to pay for a carry on bag…nice touch.
