Tesla FSD 12.5 Rolling Out: Model Y with HW4 Gets Priority
Tesla started rolling out its Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 12.5 to some testers beyond employees on late Monday evening. This is the version that will eventually bring FSD to Cybertruck.
But many seeing FSD 12.5 were only on vehicles with Hardware 4 (HW4), such as @WholeMarsBlog. When he asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk on X, “Can you confirm whether this is the next gen model with 5x parameter count you described in a previous X post? If so, I imagine HW3 will run a quantized version or something?”.
That’s when Musk replied on Tuesday, “We are focusing on just Model Y with HW4 for the initial release. Make sure that works well, then broaden. This has the 5X increase in parameters. HW3 would run the same parameter count, but requires extra work to optimize the code.”
This build doesn’t yet have a merged city and highway code yet, as promised.
Newer Tesla vehicles with HW4 have a more powerful computer, plus cameras with higher resolution. Hopefully the release of FSD 12.5 will soon make its way to HW3 vehicles. Musk did not clarify the timeline, but we may hear more on today’s Q2 earnings call.
