Tesla’s Gigafactory in Mexico Still on Track, Say Officials

Despite Tesla’s massive global employee layoffs, work on incentives related to infrastructure for its installation in Nuevo León continues, confirmed the State’s Secretariat of Economy.

Iván Rivas, head of the state agency, assured that the coordinated work with Tesla personnel remains active. In an interview, Rivas emphasized that despite the global job cuts, the Tesla Gigafactory in Santa Catarina remains on track.

“We have not received any changes in signals. We continue to work closely with them, particularly on the incentives contract. Communication is very close, and we are still working together. The only thing I cannot specify is the exact start date, but Tesla is definitely coming,” Rivas stated to Milenio.

He detailed that these incentives include expanding the Monterrey-Saltillo highway from two to three lanes, constructing bridges for factory access, and developing water infrastructure to provide treated water needed for the plant.

“We are working extensively on the commitments related to the accepted incentives, which involve infrastructure. We are expanding the Monterrey-Saltillo highway to three lanes for easier access, building bridges for entry and exit from the site, and working on treated water infrastructure,” Rivas explained.

The Secretary of Economy mentioned that the announcement of the Gigafactory construction has boosted the electromobility hub in the state, with 30 suppliers now established to supply the factory.

This information was shared during the presentation of the International Mobility of the Future Summit (IMOF), the largest mobility event in LATAM, scheduled to be held in Monterrey on June 26 and 27 at Cintermex.

“The International Mobility of the Future Summit will take place on June 26 and 27. We aim to showcase to the world the electromobility advancements in Nuevo León and bring international experts to discuss the future directions in electromobility, understanding where Nuevo León should head in this field,” Rivas affirmed.
