2024 Tesla Model 3 vs 2023 Model Y: Differences Compared
MotorTrend recently went hands-on with Tesla’s newest 2024 Model 3 ‘Highland’ update, and now they have compared the differences and similarities with a 2023 Model Y.
What’s New in Model 3
The updated Model 3 features several new body panels, excluding the doors and rear fenders, designed for better aerodynamics, tighter gaps, and improved sealing. These enhancements contribute to better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. The acoustic glass now used for all windows further diminishes interior noise.
Interior upgrades include a subtly redesigned dashboard and door panels with new fabric trim and color-selectable ambient lighting. The optional two-tone interior extends the white faux leather beyond the seats to the door panels and dash. A newly designed rear seat with better cushioning and backrest angle enhances comfort.
Technologically, the Model 3 boasts a new 8.0-inch rear touchscreen, mirroring most functions of the front screen. The front area sees a new steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons and a backup touch-sensitive shifter on the ceiling, among other improvements. This rear screen feature is similar to what’s available in the higher-end Model S and Model X.
Underneath, new passive frequency-adaptive shock absorbers and stiffer suspension and chassis bushings elevate the ride quality without compromising handling. Updated steering knuckles and front suspension geometry promise sharper steering.
Looking at the Model 3’s exterior panel gaps they not as obvious compared to the Model Y. The doors of the Model 3 close with a more satisfying sound compared to the Model Y, indicating better build quality. The interior of the Model 3 features higher quality materials and a more sophisticated design, with reduced cabin noise and no noticeable rattles, unlike the Model Y, says the publication.
The Model 3 offers a significantly quieter and smoother ride, with fewer vibrations and impacts reaching the cabin. Rear seat passengers in the Model 3 enjoy more control over their environment, thanks to the new rear touchscreen.
From a driving perspective, the new suspension geometry in the Model 3 is not immediately noticeable. The predictive shifter and touch controls on the steering wheel offer a distinct, yet potentially divisive, driving experience. The Model 3 gains an edge with blind spot warning indicators embedded in the exterior mirrors for enhanced situational awareness.
Given the substantial improvements in the new Model 3, including its superior ride, quieter interior, and enhanced build quality, those considering a Model Y may benefit from waiting for these upgrades to be carried over to the SUV. The updated Model 3, with its better construction and technological enhancements, sets a new benchmark for Tesla’s compact electric vehicles, says MotorTrend.
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 showcases significant improvements in build quality, interior comfort, and technological advancements, making it a strong contender against the current Model Y and worth the wait for those anticipating the SUV’s update, expected to come sometime in the near future.
