U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is contemplating trading in her Tesla vehicle for an electric car manufactured by union workers. The New York Democrat’s comments came during an ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against the Big Three automakers.
Ocasio-Cortez stated that she initially purchased her Tesla to commute between her New York City district and Washington, D.C. during the pandemic. However, she noted that there are now union-made electric vehicles available with the necessary range for her commute. “We’re actually looking into trading in our car now, and hopefully we will soon,” she said during an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation.
The congresswoman’s remarks add another layer to her public exchanges with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and the world’s richest man. The two have previously clashed on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, which Musk owns.
Ocasio-Cortez’s consideration of a union-made electric vehicle comes at a time when labor relations are a focal point in the automotive industry, highlighted by the ongoing UAW strike.
