Starlink Outperforms Competitors in Global Satellite Internet Ratings

Recent data indicates that Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, continues to gain favor among users across multiple continents, including Africa, Europe, and Oceania.

The data, shared this week by Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence, reveals that Starlink’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) consistently outperforms the aggregate of all fixed broadband providers in countries like France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom for Q2 2023.

NPS is a metric used to gauge customer loyalty and is calculated based on user responses to how likely they are to recommend their provider. In France, for instance, Starlink’s NPS was significantly higher than the aggregate score of fixed broadband providers, despite having a slightly slower median download speed of 107.56 Mbps compared to 165.37 Mbps.

In Germany, both Starlink and the aggregate of fixed broadband providers had similar median download speeds, 83.16 Mbps and 82.56 Mbps respectively, for Q2 2023. However, Starlink had a higher NPS rating of 38.19 compared to the aggregate’s -30.10.

Starlink also showed strong performance in Italy and the U.K., with NPS scores of 50.20 and 47.18 respectively, far outpacing the aggregate scores of -25.61 and -26.88. Median download speeds were also higher for Starlink in these countries.

The data also highlighted Starlink’s performance in rural or remote regions, which are often underserved by traditional broadband offerings. Starlink had median download speeds greater than 100 Mbps in 14 European countries during Q2 2023.

In Africa, where Starlink launched in Nigeria this past January, the service had a faster median download speed of 63.69 Mbps compared to the aggregate of all fixed broadband providers at 15.60 Mbps during Q2 2023.

While Starlink still waits to face competition from other satellite providers and upcoming projects like Amazon’s Project Kuiper, the data suggests that it remains the leader in the satellite internet market, for now.
