Tesla’s Mexico Factory Production May Be Up to 4 Years Away: Report
Tesla is reportedly looking at a potential 2026 or 2027 start date for production at its new major factory in Mexico, as mentioned in a recent article by the Mexican daily, Reforma (via Reuters). The timeline seems to be a deviation from earlier reports suggesting a 2025 start.
Reforma’s report is grounded on statements from an anonymous Chinese supplier, who indicated that multiple Chinese companies, including theirs, might postpone their plans to initiate operations near Tesla’s yet-to-be-constructed facility in Nuevo Leon. The delays come in light of what appears to be Tesla’s slower-than-anticipated plans for the factory.
The supplier informed Reforma, “A few months ago, there was an urgent push to find a location. However, just a month after, we were instructed to hold on.”
In contrast to the recent news, sources had previously informed Reuters that Tesla had initially projected to commence production in Mexico by 2025.
Tesla, having announced its Mexican venture in March, has not yet publicly disclosed any specific dates for the beginning of either construction or production.
Nuevo Leon’s economy minister, Ivan Rivas, chose not to comment on the timeline for Tesla’s activities, suggesting it’s a topic best addressed by the company itself.
Adding another layer to the timeline conversation, Reforma mentioned insights from Danish engineering consultancy, Ramboll. They speculate, considering the permitting processes, that the site might only be construction-ready by 2027.
Giga Mexico will be the newest Tesla factory, with a smaller footprint due to its more efficient car-making processes that will be applied to the company’s mass-market next-gen vehicle.
