Tesla Gains Approval for Drive-In Movie Supercharger Site

Tesla is set to redefine charging stops, as the electric car manufacturer secures a permit to launch its much-anticipated Diner and Drive-In Movie Supercharger in Los Angeles.

The permit, confirmed by documents acquired by Teslarati from the LA Department of Building and Safety, opens the door for Tesla to commence its groundbreaking project.

Originally teased as a Santa Monica-based venture, Tesla’s Drive-In Movie Theater and Diner Supercharger site now finds its home at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. The ambitious facility is slated to feature 32 Supercharger stalls, a dining establishment complete with rooftop seating, and two screens dedicated to screening classic movie scenes.

As Tesla navigated complex regulatory approvals, the company faced a mixture of approvals and correction requests on its construction applications for the site. But the green light brightened significantly in late July. The City of Los Angeles approved Tesla’s proposal, submitted in November 2022, to grade the venue, construct walls, and erect movie screens. Following an eight-month review, a formal permit was issued on July 18.

Behind this pioneering project are reputable partners. Stantec Architecture, based in Chandler, Arizona, is credited as the venture’s architect, while Glendale, California’s PCL Construction Services Inc. is named as the contractor.

With the initial grading inspection completed and stamped with approval on August 9, Tesla is primed to launch its unique vision into reality. CEO Elon Musk has emphasized the site’s diverse offerings, from its charging amenities to its exclusive cinematic and dining experience.

This Drive-In Supercharger, seamlessly blending nostalgia with innovation, is set to be a game-changer, reimagining what a charging stop can offer Tesla users. We can’t wait for this to come to fruition.
