In an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Tesla’s Giga Shanghai Factory, a rare glimpse at the production process of the Tesla Model Y was shown to South Korean YouTube channel, MOCAR (via @Tslachan).
The Giga Shanghai Factory is a testament to Tesla’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The factory’s mission is evident in its motto: “Accelerator to the world. Transition to sustainability energy.”
Contrary to popular belief, the factory is not entirely automated. A harmonious blend of human workers and robots work side-by-side, challenging the traditional separation seen in other car factories.
The factory boasts impressive numbers: producing one car every 35 seconds, with the entire line being completed in just 3 hours. It works out to roughly 100 cars made in 1 hour.
Tesla’s innovative approach is evident in its production process. For instance, the back of the Model Y is made using a giga casting machine, which stamps the entire section, making it lightweight and speeding up production.
The factory has adopted a unique “marriage” process where the chassis and the body of the car are combined. This modular approach allows for flexibility in the production line, making it easier to adjust based on demand.
Quality control is paramount. Three teams meticulously inspect each car for any issues related to the frame, assembly, and overall quality. Every detail, down to the alignment of the door handles, is scrutinized.
The cars produced in the Shanghai Gigafactory are said to surpass the quality of those made in Europe and America. The attention to detail and commitment to perfection are evident in the final product.
The tour concluded with a reflection on the misconceptions surrounding Chinese-made cars. Contrary to the belief that they might be of inferior quality, the cars produced in the Shanghai Gigafactory are a testament to Tesla’s commitment to excellence, regardless of the location.
