Tesla has unveiled its first service center on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada, located in the suburb of Langford west of the province’s capital city of Victoria.
Previously, any major Tesla repairs required customers to take a ferry over to the Lower Mainland. But that has all changed.
The grand opening of the facility, complete with a VIP ribbon-cutting ceremony, took place on Thursday, July 27, around 16 months after a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2022. The presence of Tesla in the region promises to enhance the local economy and stimulate more sustainable transportation methods.
Tesla vehicles such as the Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y were on hand for the grand opening.
Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson said, “This is such an awesome day…The arrival of the Tesla dealership in Langford represents a significant milestone for the city. Not only does it align with council’s environmental responsibility, it also signifies a growing awareness of the demand for electric vehicles on Vancouver Island.”
The expansive 35,000-square-foot building, situated on City Gate Boulevard near Costco, is expected to provide up to 50 full-time jobs and contribute roughly $295,000 in taxes to Langford within its first operational year.
While the new facility bears some resemblance to traditional car dealerships, Tesla’s service centers function quite differently. The focus of the center will be servicing Tesla vehicles, although demo cars will be available for prospective customers to examine and test drive.
Purchases will continue to be made online only, but the new center will operate as a collection point, removing the necessity for customers to travel to the mainland to collect their new Tesla vehicles.
“The fact this facility exists is really a breakthrough, and represents what’s happening in the industry for sure,” said David Grove, past-president of the Victoria Electric Vehicle Association. “It’s going to accelerate EV adoption. We are on the exponential rise of the adoption curve it seems. The fact this service station exists here is remarkable, and the size of it shows it will take them well into the future and accommodate lots of growth.”
Grove also noted that such a substantial commitment from Tesla signals strong support from the company, the industry, and the government for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
