Tesla’s Clever Connecticut Store is ‘Evading the Law’, Claims Car Dealer
Tesla has developed an ingenious strategy to bypass restrictive Connecticut state law and open its first sales and delivery center in the state this fall, causing a stir among local businesses and authorities.
Until recently, anyone wishing to buy a Tesla had to travel out of state due to Connecticut laws requiring automakers to sell their products through dealerships. However, Tesla pioneered selling its vehicles directly to consumers, sidestepping the traditional dealership model.
To overcome the state restriction, Tesla has decided to operate within the confines of the Mohegan Tribe’s land, capitalizing on its status as a sovereign nation.
Kevin Lowry, the Assistant General Manager at Mohegan Sun, shared his excitement, stating, “[I’m] extremely excited. You know Tesla’s brand is one-of-a-kind.” He further clarified that while they “align with many Connecticut laws and regulations by operating on sovereign land,” they don’t necessarily have to abide by every law and regulation.
Connecticut’s Governor, Ned Lamont, affirmed the tribe’s right to house Tesla’s operations. “I think it’s within Mohegan Sun’s right to do it,” he stated. “They are a sovereign nation.”
While Mohegan Sun’s management celebrates this partnership, some local businesses aren’t as thrilled. Bradley Hoffman, the co-chairman of Hoffman Auto Group, expressed his concern about Tesla evading the state law.
“Our issue is with Tesla, and them frankly evading the law that is in Connecticut right now,” Hoffman declared to WTNH. Although Hoffman doesn’t foresee a significant impact on the state’s dealerships, he worries about the lack of dealership support for Tesla customers in the state.
The Tesla showroom, located across from Todd English’s Tuscany in The Shops at Mohegan Sun, will allow casino guests to browse, buy, and take delivery of the Teslas. With a designated test-drive area at the Sky Valet, customers can also take any of the five available vehicles for a spin. The setup will include a garage capable of housing up to 150 Teslas.
Adding to the unique experience, Mohegan Sun guests will be able to use their Momentum Dollars to buy a Tesla. The electric car giant will also offer technician training to tribal members and casino workers, although no servicing or repairs will take place at the casino itself. This inventive approach signifies a new era of Tesla sales within Connecticut, defying traditional boundaries.
