Tesla to Open New Distribution Center in Orange County
Tesla is set to establish a regional distribution center in Newburgh by year-end, promising to initially create more than 100 jobs at the Route 300 facility. The news was announced on Tuesday by the Orange County Partnership, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting business development in Orange County, reports Times Union.
Tesla is set to occupy a newly-constructed 927,000-square-foot facility developed by New Jersey-based Matrix Development Group. The warehouse is one of two speculative builds by Matrix in a business park located across from the Newburgh Mall since 2022. This business park, near Interstate 84, the Thruway, and New York Stewart International Airport, is seen as an ideal location for distribution.
“The Tesla signing is yet another example of the value of speculative development, and exactly why we supported the approval of this robust business park,” stated Maureen Halahan, CEO of the Orange County Partnership. “Our market is strong — we will continue to support site development in the effort to attract more quality companies to Orange County.”
Halahan indicated that Tesla plans to initially hire 150 workers, with the eventual goal of expanding to a workforce of up to 300. The Newburgh operations will focus solely on vehicle parts distribution, with no manufacturing processes involved.
Tesla has several stores in New York City and the Hudson Valley areas where it has been able to sell vehicles. Despite state prohibitions on selling cars directly to consumers without going through a third-party franchise, the company has found some ways to expand its dealer network in upstate New York.
Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus sees Tesla’s entry into Orange County as a boon for the local workforce. “Tesla is changing the automotive industry in America and abroad,” Neuhaus stated. “Having a relationship with Tesla in Orange County can raise income levels for our area and create good jobs. It will also increase competition for our workforce and is another major name in the American economy choosing to come to Orange County.”
