Tesla’s Domestic Sales in China Jump 75% in June Versus May

Tesla China reported sales of 93,680 electric vehicles (EVs) in June, with 19,468 units destined for export, as per recent data published by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This data released on Monday showed Tesla delivered 74,212 vehicles in China for the month of June, marking a 4.78% decline from the same month last year when it delivered 77,938 vehicles, reports CnEVPost. However, compared to May’s delivery of 42,508 units, it represents a significant monthly increase of 74.58%.

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory sold 30,637 Model 3 and 63,043 Model Y units respectively in June, including exports. Detailed figures for their domestic sales have yet to be disclosed.

According to CPCA, China saw new energy vehicle (NEV) sales hit 665,000 units in June, a 25.1% year-on-year increase and a 14.66% rise from May. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales were reported at 449,000 units, a 6.1% year-on-year increase and a 15.72% rise from May.

Tesla’s share in the Chinese NEV market in June was 11.16%, up from 7.33% in May, but down from 14.65% a year ago. In China’s BEV market, Tesla’s share was 16.53% in June, rising from 10.96% in May but lower than the 18.38% from the same month last year.

Typically, Tesla manufactures vehicles for export during the first half of the quarter and for the local market during the second half. In June, its Shanghai factory reported a 44.67% reduction in exports from May but a twentyfold increase compared to the same period last year.

For the first half of the year, Tesla sold 476,539 China-made vehicles, a 61.67% increase from the previous year. The Shanghai factory also exported 182,434 vehicles during this period, marking an 87.72% surge. Deliveries to Chinese customers in the first half of the year reached 294,105 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 48.86%.

Currently, Tesla is keeping tabs on its Giga Shanghai Model 3 production floor as the rumoured ‘Highland’ refresh is coming. The revamped Model 3 prototypes are being tested at the factory site during weekends, and further refinements to the production line are being implemented. Drone flight limits have been set up around Giga Shanghai preventing video to be recorded around the factory.

Last week, Tesla raised referral incentives for the Model 3 and Model Y in China, with an aim to boost sales of its locally produced models. Customers who purchase a Model 3 or Model Y on the recommendation of an existing Tesla owner will receive a cash bonus, while the referrer will earn reward points.
