Tesla Clarifies Canadian Model Y RWD Weight Confusion

Last month Tesla re-introduced a rear-wheel drive (RWD) Model Y for the Canadian market, priced at $59,990 CAD, thus allowing the compact crossover to qualify for federal and provincial rebates.

With a report claiming this Model Y RWD will come from Giga Shanghai, thus using LFP batteries like the Model 3 RWD, many saw the new Model Y RWD specs and started to wonder what was behind some of the odd numbers.

Specifically, the Model Y RWD in Canada is listed at 2,298 kg, which is 319 kg more than the Model Y Long Range. This didn’t make sense since the RWD has less range than the more expensive Long Range.

Secondly, compared to the Model Y RWD in Australia, this Canadian Model Y RWD was showing as weighing 389 kg more, while showing higher charging capabilities of up to 250 kW Max, while the Aussie version was showing at 170 kW Max.

The question posed by Mathias Fons was—“did Tesla stealth launch new [Model Y tech?”.

Well, sometimes you just have to be patient and it turns out this was all a typo on Tesla’s part. As of Wednesday morning, the Tesla website for the Canadian Model Y RWD has been updated—to now list its weight as 1,909 kg, which is the same as the Australian equivalent.

So there you have it. No stealth tech or anything, just seemingly a typo on Tesla’s website. With both federal and provincial rebates, Canadians can save up to $12,000 CAD off the Model Y RWD and Long Range ($5000 federal; $7,000 in Quebec), depending on the province.
