The rumours of Tesla setting up some sort of assembly plant in Mexico aren’t going away anytime soon.

According to Reuters, Tesla is pondering an assembly plant near a Mexico City airport, according to presidential spokesman Jesus Ramirez. The new plant would be an export hub for Tesla.

Ramirez says the location being considered is an upcoming industrial “T-MexPark” that’s under construction, located 2 miles (3km) from the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), which is a new hub opened by Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in 2022.

“Tesla is looking at investing in that area to take advantage of AIFA,” Ramirez said to Reuters late on Monday. Ramirez said the new location could be an export base for Tesla by air, which would seem odd if we are talking about automobiles.

The news follows up on previous statements made by Ramirez to the newspaper El Heraldo de Mexico about Tesla investing in the area. “Tesla will invest there … in an assembly plant, to export directly by air,” Ramirez was quoted as saying.

Reuters says a Mexican official told the publication Tesla has been shown the new site. Tesla has been reportedly considering an investment in the northern state of Nuevo León, which borders Texas, claims Reuters.

Last week, an official from Nuevo León told Nikkei that Tesla and Mexico had yet to reach an EV factory deal.

Back in December, local reports claimed Tesla was set to announce some sort of factory in Mexico in early 2023, but that has yet to materialize.
