The vehicle rental company Hertz has launched the Hertz Electrifies initiative in Denver, geared toward helping to increase electric vehicle (EV) adoption, as stated by the company in a press release on Thursday.

The initiative also oversees a new partnership between Hertz and the city of Denver to help spur the transition to EVs, with hopes to bring as many as 5,200 rental EVs to the city for ridesharing and rentals.

Hertz is basing the program around five pillars, including bolstering EV fleet numbers and the charging network, expanding education and jobs in the sector, economic opportunity, community engagement and city planning.

Additionally, Hertz plans to share telematics data from the EVs with the city to help plan for the future of the city’s charging infrastructure.

“Electric vehicles are poised to transform the future of mobility,” Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr said. “Hertz is proud to launch Hertz Electrifies in partnership with the city of Denver, which is fast becoming a center for sustainability under the leadership of Mayor Michael Hancock.”

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock pointed to the program as a crucial piece of the city’s plan to reduce carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050, noting that it can also help equip future workers with the education and resources to succeed in the emerging sector.

The news comes just a few weeks after Hertz announced surging profits from adding Tesla and other EV brands to its rentals over the last couple of years.
