Tesla Model Y Led EV Sales in Italy for November
Tesla’s Model Y dominated Italy’s electric vehicle (EV) market in November, with a total of 1,008 units registered during the month — reports CleanTechnica.
While EV sales in the country were down 26% year-over-year to 5,162 units for the month, the Model Y accounted for almost 20% of the registrations. EVs only managed to secure a 4.2% market share, trending behind plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) at 5.5%.
Notably, the Model Y sold over twice as well as the Smart ForTwo, which came in second place with 471 units sold. This was the Tesla Model Y’s best monthly result in Italy so far.
The Italian car market has proven to be a tough nut to crack for EVs. Internal combustion engine-powered vehicles are more resilient than other European markets, commanding a combined 45.1% market share in November. Plugless hybrids, meanwhile, saw their market share grow to 33.6% from 31.3% last year.
Lower-priced mini EVs can’t seem to gain traction in the country, leaving the Model Y to lead all-electric sales. That’s despite the Model Y not being eligible for sales incentives like most other EVs being sold in Italy.
Italy may be an exception, but EV adoption across Europe is soaring, and Tesla is at the forefront. Tesla is also able to price the Model Y more competitively since it started producing it at its German Gigafactory in Berlin-Brandenburg. According to a report from last week, Giga Berlin is now producing 3,000 Model Y units per week.
