Tesla Gets Funding to Build 30+ Supercharger Sites in New South Wales, Australia
New South Wales, Australia, announced it will build over 500 new fast and ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers across the state.
The NSW Government announced on Sunday it is investing $39.4 million ($24.8 million USD) as part of its first round of Fast Charging Grants, to co-develop 86 new fast and ultra-fast EV chargers, with each station to have 4 to 15 charging bays.
“This investment will see the largest, fastest and most comprehensive public EV charging network in Australia,” said Treasurer and Minister for Energy Matt Kean, in a statement.
“Each of these stations will contain a minimum of two ultra-fast EV charging bays of 350kW capacity, and two fast charging bays of 175kW, with some stations containing up to 15 bays,” added the Minister.
The ultra-fast chargers will be able to charge “modern EVs” from 20 to 80 percent in about 15 minutes and all of these stations will be powered by renewable energy.
“This is the first of an expected three funding rounds, with hundreds more stations set to be built over the coming years,” said Kean.
Successful applicants from this round of funding include Tesla, and Ampol, BP, Evie Networks, the NRMA and Zeus Renewables. NSW says these new EV charging stations will be constructed over the next 24 months, located around highways and inner-city locations.
The government wants to add roughly 250 fast and ultra-fast EV chargers across NSW, while ensuring chargers are spaced no further than 5 km (3.1 miles) in metro areas and no more than 100 km (62.1 miles) on major roads and highways.
The next round of co-funding is said to be announced at the end of 2022, says NSW.
