Tesla Leads U.S. EV Marketshare with 67%, Tops Luxury Regardless of Fuel Type

According to Q3 2022 data from Motor Intelligence on electric vehicle market share in the U.S., Tesla continues to lead with 67.4% of sales, despite dipping slightly.

Tesla is still ramping up production at its new Gigafactories in Texas and Germany.

According to Experian data, Automotive News reports Tesla’s Model Y leads top 10 EV models by new registrations, with 134,978 through January to August 2022. In second place is the Tesla Model 3 with 123,634, followed by Ford’s Mustang Mach-E with 25,596, increasing 62% versus the same period one year ago.

Model Y registrations jumped 28% and Model 3 increased 53% year-over-year.

Tesla saw its EV registrations jump 54% year-over-year, up from 194,202 to 298,383, from the January to August 2022 period, leading both gas and EV car makers in the luxury segment.

In second behind Tesla was Hyundai Motor Group, reporting 43,072 new EV registrations across Kia, Hyundai and Genesis brands, taking 9.4% share. Ford took 7.3% share with 33,354 EV registrations, with 25,596 coming from the Mustang Mach-E.

Chevrolet saw its EV registrations drop 35%, and Volkswagen saw a 15% EV decline.

BMW saw its luxury car registrations fall by 11 percent, Mercedes-Benz saw a 7% drop, while Lexus fell 20%, according to Experian data.

Tesla will report its Q3 earnings on October 19, 2022.
