The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has just added 1,300 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers across its footprint — reports Autoblog.

508 of these chargers are located in a new, 4,300-space economy parking structure close to the airport.

The new parking structure cost $294 million USD and construction was completed last year. It was greenlit as one of the four parts of a $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) under the $14.5 billion modernization project announced for LAX back in 2019.

In addition, the new parking structure has been designed to lower its overall carbon footprint by using low-energy lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and recycled water. It also houses spaces reserved for low-emissions vehicles.

Energy company PowerFlex was contracted to install 500 Level 2 chargers and eight DC fast chargers inside the new parking structure. The remaining chargers have been installed at parking stations across the airport itself, in the lots outside the airline terminals.

EV drivers going to LAX can reserve parking spots with and without chargers in advance on the airport’s website.

On top of the parking fee, you’ll have to pay $2 to hook your car up to an EV charger and $0.45 per kilowatt-hour to charge it. That comes out to about $35 to fully charge a Tesla Model 3, or $43 for a Ford Mustang Mach E with the extended-range battery.

U.S. President Joe Biden aims to reach 500,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2030. Last month, the White House proposed new standards to help meet that goal.
