Tesla Requires Owners to Install 2022.4 Due to AT&T 3G Network Shutdown
AT&T shut down its 3G cellular network on Tuesday, and the change affected numerous companies that relied on the legacy network, including Tesla. The shutdown means the end of cellular connectivity for vehicles that relied on 3G network signals.
Tesla has been notifying customers to update to its 2022.4 software, if they want to “maintain compatibility with AT&T cellular network changes.”
An in-car pop up notification reads, “This vehicle requires a software update to at least 2022.4 in order to maintain compatibility with AT&T cellular network changes taking place on February 22, 2022.”
Tesla warns, “If not updated, this vehicle may no longer be compatible with receiving over-the-air software updates, maps and navigation features, accessing the Tesla Mobile App & associated features, utilizing voice commands, receiving streaming media content, or other connectivity dependent features over cellular data.”
The automaker does note, “features will remain accessible over Wi-Fi. Please install the available software release. If you are persistently experiencing software update installation failures please schedule a service appointment via Tesla Mobile App.”
Tesla owners such as Ernest M. from Facebook noted he will now need to install 2022.4 on his Model 3, thus a forced change to accept the V11 software he’s been holding out against.
AT&T is the first major wireless provider to shut down its 3G network, a change that kicked in on Tuesday. Fellow telecoms T-Mobile and Verizon will similarly sunset their 3G networks later this year, instead focusing on faster 4G and 5G networks instead.
