Elon Musk Elected into the National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering announced on Wednesday it has elected Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as one of its new members.

“Musk, Elon Reeve, founder, chief executive officer, and chief engineer, SpaceX, Hawthorne, Calif. For breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and operation of reusable launch vehicles and sustainable transportation and energy systems,” reads the bio for Musk.

Musk joins notables such as Saya Nadella, the chairman and CEO of Microsoft, while Kathleen Bergeron, Vice President, Hardware Engineering, at Apple Inc., also was elected.

“Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer,” explains the academy.

Membership those that have made “outstanding contributions” to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education,” says the academy.

Musk reacted to being elected by saying, “much appreciated!” on Wednesday afternoon.

Musk joins 110 other elected members and 22 International members, with the newly elected class to be inducted at the NAE’s annual meeting on October 2, 2022.

Total U.S. membership of the NAE now reaches 2,388 and the number of international members to 310.
