2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV Unveiled, its First Plug-In Hybrid

Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Tonale hybrid, a partially-electric SUV and the company’s first move to electrify its lineup, according to a press release from parent company Stellantis on Tuesday.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is set to offer two variants: a hybrid and a plugin hybrid Q4, based on a 48-volt hybrid propulsion system.

Still, the vehicle will be able to start and travel at low speeds in an all-electric mode. The Tonale SUV electric hybrid will feature 275 horsepower and an expected up to 80 km (49 miles) on electric-only settings.

On the interior, the Tonale will feature two TFT screens for a total of 22.5 inches, featuring over-the-air (OTA) software updates and compatibility with Amazon’s Alexa.

The vehicle will also include a telescopic instrument panel and a DNA driving mode selector for customizing the driver’s experience while on the road.

The Tonale will also be the first car that features a non-fungible token (NFT) digital certificate.

While it’s not clear when first deliveries will begin, the company plans to produce the Tonale at its revamped Giambattista Vico plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Italy.

Earlier this year, Stellantis also announced a partnership with Amazon to develop software for its cars, starting in 2024.

Stellantis also shared plans last year to develop Level 3 self-driving with BMW by 2024, while it works on Level 4 and 5 self-driving with Waymo.
