Canada Sees Zero-Emission Vehicle Registrations Surge in Q2 2021
Statistics Canada has released data for vehicle registrations in Canada for Q2 2021. Looking at new motor vehicle registrations for zero-emission vehicles (ZEV; which includes battery, plug-in hybrid-electric and hybrid electric vehicles), there were 24,006 for the second quarter, taking 4.9% of total vehicle registrations.
Canada says 49.1% of new ZEVs were registered in Quebec and 24% were registered in British Columbia. Both provinces benefited from provincial and federal rebates for electric vehicles, with the latter offering $5,000 CAD through the iZEV program.
Tesla’s Model 3 Standard Range Plus qualifies for both provincial and federal rebates, hence the immense popularity of the vehicle in these provinces.
Looking at registrations year-over-year, zero-emission vehicles surged in many provinces:
- Prince Edward Island (+320.0%)
- New Brunswick (+277.4%)
- Ontario (+210.7%)
- Saskatchewan (+185.7%)
- Manitoba (+136.9%)
Looking at new ZEVs registrations by city in the second quarter, here are the top three:
- Montréal (6,163)
- Vancouver (3,996)
- Toronto (2,810)
“Multi-purpose vehicles were the preferred zero-emission vehicle choice for Canadians in the second quarter, accounting for over half (56.3%) of all new zero-emission vehicles registered in the quarter, followed by passenger cars (42.2%) and vans (1.4%),” explained StatsCan.
StatsCan points out, “estimates for Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Alberta are currently unavailable because of contractual limitations of the existing data sharing agreement. However, they are included in the Canadian total.”
