California is set to receive 100 battery-electric regional haul trucks for hauling regionally, as a result of a new project formed between Daimler Trucks and Volvo Trucks announced during the ACT Expo.

A joint project called the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative (JETSI) is now considered the largest commercial deployment of electric trucks in North America, with the company set to unveil 100 of the electric class 8 trucks in California, according to Fleet Owner.

The project between Daimler and Volvo will also cooperate closely with California’s Air Resources Board (CARB), the California Energy Commission (CEC), and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD).

The project will start by deploying 80 battery-electric Freightliner eCascadias, which represent the first electric Class 8 commercial truck, and the first truck of its kind released by Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). The initial round will be delivering 50 trucks to Schneider, and 30 trucks to NFI.

The news also comes ahead of California’s gas car sales ban, which is set to take place in 2035, allowing only the new sale of fully-electric cars.

South Coast AQMD Board Member Gideon Kracov “We are proud to be a part of this historic initiative here in Southern California.” Kracov continued, “The agency has always been a leader in innovative collaborations that help advance zero‐emission transportation and protect the health of our communities.”

The eight-year project has garnered a wide range of partners, and was funded with $26.98 million USD from CARB’s California Climate Investments Initiative and the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program, with an additional $5.43 million USD from South Coast AQMD, with and $41.37 million USD from a wide range of other project partners.
