Toyota to Launch Two Battery Electric Vehicles in the U.S. This Year
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) has announced it plans to launch three electric vehicles in the United States in 2021, consisting of two battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
“We continue to be leaders in electrification that began with our pioneering introduction of the Prius nearly 25 years ago,” said Bob Carter, TMNA executive vice president of sales, in a statement. “Toyota’s new electrified product offerings will give customers multiple choices of powertrain that best suits their needs.”
Toyota says by 2025, it plans to have 40% of new vehicle sales be electrified models, with the number forecasting to nearly 70% by 2030.
From 2021 to 2025, Toyota and Lexus vehicles will have an electrified option worldwide. A new dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform, known as e-TNGA, will allow for various drive configurations.
“We believe the fastest way to lower greenhouse gases in the transportation sector is to offer drivers lower carbon choices that meet their needs,” said Gill Pratt, chief scientist of Toyota Motor Corporation and CEO of Toyota Research Institute, in a statement. “At every price point and with multiple powertrains, we can put more people in cleaner automobiles across North America to have the greatest near-term impact on total carbon emissions.”
The company did not elaborate on its battery-electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Currently, Toyota has two PHEV models available, the Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime.
