Nanaimo Airport to Get 4 New Electric Vehicle Chargers in $400,000 Project

The City of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia is set to get four new electric vehicle chargers at its airport.

Natural Resources Canada announced on Monday a $200,000 CAD ($155,960 USD) investment for four EV fast chargers. The funding comes from Canada’s Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative.

The B.C. government and Nanaimo Airport each added $100,000 CAD to the chargers, taking the total funding to $400,000 CAD.

The Canadian government has an ambitious plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. “Canadians want greener options to get to where they need to go. We’re giving it to them. This is how we get to net zero by 2050,” said Seamus O’Regan Jr., Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.

Recently, data from IHS Markit for Canada revealed Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y led plug-in electric vehicle sales in 2020, assisted by provincial rebates in BC, Quebec and Canada’s federal EV rebate.

The Nanaimo Airport Commission announced a $28.8 million infrastructure capital plan in December, to help the Central Island’s economic recovery, due to COVID-19 cutting down the number of flights to and from the airport.
