Tesla Announces 2021 Model S Plaid Refresh with New Steering Wheel and More
Tesla has announced its 2021 Model S refresh. Joining the Dual Motor AWD Long Range are two Tri Motor AWD versions, Plaid and Plaid+.
Also new are three displays in this Model S refresh. And for the first time? Model S now supports a phone key, like Model 3 and Model Y. This means you can use the Tesla app to unlock your vehicle.

“With 2200×1300 resolution, ultra-bright colors with exceptional responsiveness and left-right tilt, the new center display is an ideal touchscreen for entertainment and gaming anywhere. A second display in front of the driver shows critical driving information, and a third display provides entertainment and controls for rear passengers,” explains Tesla.
The back of the Tesla now lets you play video games via Tesla Arcade. “Up to 10 teraflops of processing power enables in-car gaming on-par with today’s newest consoles via Tesla Arcade. Wireless controller compatibility allows gaming from any seat.”
There are now also tri-zone climate controls, plus a new steering wheel called Yoke Steering. “The ultimate focus on driving: no stalks, no shifting. With a stalkless steering yoke, you can enjoy both the best car to drive, and the best car to be driven in,” says Tesla.
There’s now also 22-speaker audio with 960 watts and new microphones for active noise canceling. Also new is a full glass roof that blocks infrared and UV light.
Tesla says the Model S comes with premium connectivity for one year.
Here’s the final Model S pricing–which is $10,000 USD more than before, confirmed Elon Musk on the Q4 2020 earnings call:
- Long Range AWD (delivers in March): $79,990 USD; 412 mile range; 0-60 mph in 3.1 sec
- Plaid (delivers in March): $119,990 USD; 390 mile range; 0-60 mph in 1.99 sec
- Plaid+ (delivers in Late 2021): $139,990 USD; 520 mile range; 0-60 mph in less than 1.99 sec
The Model S Plaid upgrade brings 1,020 horsepower, carbon-sleeved rotors and torque vectoring.
The Model S Plaid+ upgrade takes it to over 1,100 horsepower, making it the “Quickest 0-60 mph and 1/4 mile acceleration of any production car ever,” says Tesla. The Plaid+ can do the 1/4 mile in under 9 seconds.
