South Australia and Neoen Double Hornsdale Battery Capacity
Along with building electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla has been working hard to push its energy storage business around the world. And with new locations ranging from California in the US all the way to South Australia, the company’s work is paying off – for itself and for its beneficiaries.
The South Australian government and Neoen have decided to increase the battery capacity of the recently-built battery storage site in Hornsdale, as reported by Renew Economy. The energy storage site can now provide power reserves up to 150 MW and 194MWh for the grid, an increase on the big battery from Tesla from the previous constraints of 100MW and 129 MWh.
Along with the capacity upgrade, the Hornsdale site will also receive new services related to the electrical grid.

In a report on the system strength and inertia of the Hornsdale reserves before the upgrade, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) wrote, “On 30 September 2020, Hornsdale Power Reserve (HPR) and the South Australian Government agreed to increase the capacity reservation for HPR to 130MW (and 32.5MWh of energy storage) during any South Australia islanding event.”
Neoen has also recently begun work on what will be Australia’s biggest battery yet, set for placement in Victoria for a contract of $12.5 million (AUD) per year. Finally, the company plans to work with the Australian government to build another site in Geelong – which will be an even bigger battery endeavor than anything it had planned before.
