Now that Tesla drivers have access to an all-new beta test mode in the latest update, experiments and results from the roads are flooding in. With the beta test mode of the new Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature, Tesla vehicles demonstrate a capacity to behave in accordance with common traffic signals. Of course, the feature remains in beta test mode, so things are still being worked out. However, a new video from @FredHassen on Twitter showcases one of the feature’s more unlikely achievements.

In the video, we get a look at the driver approaching a construction site. In frame, a construction worker holds up a stop sign. As the Tesla vehicle approaches the sign, it recognizes the hand-held sign, decelerates, and comes to a full stop.
While the action may seem simple enough, it serves as a testament to the new feature’s robust awareness on the road. As established in some early reviews, Traffic Signal and Stop Sign Control makes use of the vehicle’s cameras to detect road conditions. However, the system also uses the vehicle’s maps system to navigate unseen terrain. The fact that the new feature stops for hand-held signs only serves to highlight the all-inclusive nature of the programming.
