For some time now, drivers have been curious about the in-cabin selfie cam installed in the Tesla Model 3. There’s some good reasons to question the design, too. It may have been easy to assume that the selfie cam existed to enhance security. However, some new information has come to light.
In a recent Twitter thread, @greentheonly has taken the time to delve a bit deeper into the Model 3 selfie cam. Tesla CEO Elon Musk even jumped in to further reinforce some of the points about the issue. In response to a tweet stating, “This is most likely for Robotaxis, if they vandalize your car, it’s on camera and they’ll pay for the damage and possibly get charge criminally.” Elon Musk replied saying “Correct.”
The mystery of the model3 in-cabin "selfie" cam is slowly clearing.

In any case, the camera carries a different color filter from the rest of the car’s cameras. However, in most other dimensions, such as the sensor and the resolution, the in-cabin selfie cam matches up with the rest of the Model 3 cameras. Even so, the camera aims to ease the job of robotaxis within Tesla’s future services. Moving forward, it’s reasonable to assume that Tesla has more plans in store to optimize vehicles for robotaxis.
