Starlink Mobile Launches in Ecuador With State Carrier CNT

Starlink Mobile is now live in Ecuador through a partnership with state-owned carrier CNT, letting customers with compatible phones send messages and use apps in places where regular cell service cuts out.

The company announced the launch on Tuesday, September 29, pointing to Ecuador’s mix of remote landscapes as a natural fit for the service. “From the coastline to mountains and forests, customers can access apps and messaging on compatible phones in cellular dead zones,” Starlink said.

CNT Ecuador marked the moment with its own announcement, which Starlink shared alongside the news. “Day zero has arrived for us; the CNT x Starlink alliance is official as of today. We’ll keep you connected always thanks to Starlink Mobile, the world’s largest direct-to-device technology,” the carrier said.

Ecuador is the latest stop in a rollout that has moved one country at a time, with Starlink teaming up with a local carrier in each market instead of selling the service on its own. Costa Rica joined the list in late August using the same setup, where satellites in orbit act like cell towers in the sky and an everyday phone can connect without any extra hardware.

That model fits Ecuador well, since coverage gaps are common along the Pacific coast, up in the Andes and deep in the Amazon rainforest. Anyone heading out of bigger cities like Quito and Guayaquil can lose signal quickly, and putting up towers in mountain passes or thick jungle is expensive and slow.

Starlink’s satellite network already backs carrier deals in North America, including T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service in the U.S. and Rogers Satellite in Canada. Over in Europe, the company has also lined up a satellite mobile partnership with O2 across the U.K.

With Costa Rica and Ecuador going live about a month apart, the push across Latin America is clearly picking up speed, and SpaceX keeps adding direct-to-cell satellites to its constellation to boost capacity as more countries come online.
