Waymo on Tuesday announced that it will begin testing its autonomous ride-hailing service in Denver this fall, marking the company’s latest expansion into a new U.S. city.
The Alphabet-owned self-driving company will deploy a mixed fleet of Jaguar I-PACE vehicles equipped with its 5th-generation Waymo Driver alongside Zeekr RT vehicles featuring its newer 6th-generation hardware. Waymo says its latest system builds on years of experience navigating winter weather in places like Michigan, upstate New York, and the Sierra Nevada, and is specifically designed to sustain operations in harsher climates.
As part of the rollout, Waymo is working with city and state officials in Denver to ensure a smooth introduction of its technology. “I’m excited to help Coloradans get where we want to go faster, safer, with additional transportation options.” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
“Our state is driven by innovation, and the arrival of Waymo’s autonomous vehicle technology in Denver is a step forward. We welcome Waymo to Colorado.”
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston also praised the announcement: “Whether they need a ride to work, school, the farmer’s market, or they’re heading out for a night on the town, Waymo is a great way for Denverites to get where they’re going safely. Waymo’s innovative, climate-friendly technology will not only make our streets safer but cleaner, and I can’t wait for my first ride.”
Waymo’s arrival in Denver follows a string of major updates from the company. Just last month, Waymo became the first company approved to test autonomous vehicles in New York City, although only under controlled conditions. The company also recently announced it will launch commercial robotaxi operations in Dallas, Texas, in 2026.
Just last week, Waymo rolled out a new advance booking feature, allowing riders to schedule robotaxi trips ahead of time.
