Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Surpasses 3.6 Billion Miles Driven
Tesla announced a major milestone for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, revealing that the Tesla fleet has collectively driven over 3.6 billion miles using the system, which evolved from its initial Beta phase to the current Supervised version.
Notably, 2.16 billion of those miles were logged in 2024 alone, highlighting the rapid growth and adoption of Tesla’s autonomous driving capabilities.
Tesla’s FSD journey began with the Beta program in October 2020, allowing a select group of owners to test early versions of the software on public roads. Since then, it has expanded significantly, transitioning to “Supervised” status in 2024 to reflect its ongoing need for driver oversight while emphasizing improved reliability.
By late 2024, Tesla reported over 2 billion miles driven on FSD, and the additional 1.6 billion miles in just the first three months of 2025—averaging about 8 million miles per day—demonstrate an exponential increase in usage. This surge is partly due to Tesla’s efforts to make FSD more accessible, including a price drop to $99 US/month and free trials rolled out in 2024.
The massive mileage reflects Tesla’s unique approach to AI development, relying on real-world data collected from its fleet rather than simulations or limited test vehicles, unlike competitors such as Waymo and Cruise. Elon Musk has long touted FSD as a cornerstone of Tesla’s future, predicting it will enable fully autonomous robotaxis—such as the recently unveiled Cybercab—once regulatory hurdles are cleared.
In January 2025, Tesla also boosted its AI training compute capacity by 400% in 2024, further accelerating FSD’s evolution. With 3.6 billion miles and counting, Tesla’s data advantage continues to widen, positioning it as a leader in the race toward self-driving technology.
It’s wild to think how fast miles driving with FSD are heading right now. And we’re only getting started. So far, FSD is available in Canada and the US, while it recently debuted somewhat in China.
