Tesla’s Home Charger Reigns Supreme for Fifth Straight Year

Tesla has once again ranked highest in home electric vehicle (EV) charging satisfaction, according to J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study.

For the fifth year in a row, Tesla leads the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, scoring 776 out of 1,000 points. Emporia and Wallbox followed with scores of 763 and 756, respectively.

Despite Tesla’s strong performance, overall satisfaction with home charging is slipping. Owners reported lower satisfaction with both Level 2 portable and mounted chargers compared to last year, mainly due to slower charging speeds, higher energy costs, and app-related issues. Level 2 portable chargers averaged a score of 714, while mounted versions came in at 733 — down 21 and 11 points from a year earlier.

J.D. Power noted that while Level 2 wall-mounted units still provide the best experience, they also come with the most problems. On average, users reported 39 problems per 100 units, with app and Wi-Fi issues accounting for nearly one-third of complaints.

“Home charging is still the most convenient option for EV owners, but challenges like rising electricity costs and connectivity problems are dragging down satisfaction,” said Brent Gruber, executive director of EV intelligence at J.D. Power.

The study also found regional differences in satisfaction. EV owners on the West Coast and in the Northeast are less satisfied with the cost of charging, where prices tend to be higher. Across the U.S., the average EV owner spent $58 on home charging in the past month — a $2 increase from last year.

Satisfaction took a significant hit when owners experienced slower charging speeds, dropping by 141 points compared to those who didn’t report issues.

J.D. Power surveyed over 10,000 owners of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from model years 2019 to 2025. The data was collected between November 2024 and January 2025.

The Tesla Wall Connector is just so easy to use. You grab the handle, walk up to your Tesla’s charge port and press the button on the charger handle, which then opens up the port lid. Just plug it in and walk away.
