Tesla Dials Back ‘FSD’ Branding in China Amid Approval Delays

Tesla has told customers in China that its next big update for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software is in the works—but it’s waiting on government approval before releasing anything.

In a message posted by Tesla’s customer support team, in a comment on Grace Tao’s account on Weibo, the VP of External Affairs at Tesla China, the company said it’s still going through official review processes for its intelligent driving features tied to Hardware 3.0 and 4.0. These features fall under stricter new rules in China that cover self-driving systems, recalls, and over-the-air updates.

Tesla says once approvals are in place, it will send out the update as soon as possible. The company thanked users for their patience and support, and asked everyone to stay tuned a bit longer.

Chinese Tesla users are also saying ‘FSD Intelligent Driving’ has been rebranded to just ‘Intelligent Driver Assistance’, for now. The FSD system in China relies on local Chinese map data provided by Tesla’s partners, whereas the FSD system in the U.S. and Canada uses vision-only and doesn’t require map data.

Tesla also told drivers participating in the FSD beta test in China to not share any details publicly about their tests, including screenshots and videos or online posts about their experience, as per details shared by Xiaoyu on social media.

Previously, Tesla said it would launch a free trial of its FSD software in China from March 17 to April 16. This has been paused.

The message didn’t give an exact timeline, but made it clear Tesla is just waiting for the green light from Chinese regulators.
