EV accessory maker Lectron is set to launch the VORTEX Plug, its Tesla Supercharger to CCS Adapter to let electric vehicles use the Tesla Charging Standard to charge at Tesla Superchargers.

The VORTEX Plug is designed to be compatible with EVs featuring a CCS1 connector that are part of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) alliance.

This plug is handy for EV owners that want to use the Tesla charging plug at places that have regular Tesla chargers installed, and do not have the included ‘Magic Dock’ found at Tesla Superchargers, that bring support for CCS.

This includes a range of non-Tesla EV brands like GM, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Rivian, Mercedes, Nissan, Polestar, Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, and Fisker. The adapter enables these vehicles to access Tesla’s high-speed Superchargers, a network comprising over 12,000 stations.

Key features of the VORTEX Plug include:

  • Expanded Charging Options: By using the VORTEX Plug, CCS-compatible EVs will benefit from faster charging speeds at more locations, significantly reducing waiting times.
  • Exclusive Compatibility: The adapter caters exclusively to EVs associated with the NACS, providing these vehicles with the ability to use Tesla’s Supercharger network.
  • Lightning-Fast Speed: With a rated current of 500A and voltage of 1000V, the adapter allows non-Tesla EVs to harness the full charging capabilities of Superchargers.
  • Portability and Ease of Use: The VORTEX Plug is lightweight and compact, making it an ideal travel accessory. Its plug-and-play design ensures effortless installation and use.

While the VORTEX Plug promises enhanced charging options, it is important to note that Tesla does not officially guarantee compatibility with third-party adapters. Lectron has engaged with various OEMs and automakers to ensure the adapter’s compatibility and reliability. However, for the latest guidance on using non-Tesla charging adapters with Superchargers, direct communication with Tesla is recommended.

The VORTEX Plug is priced at $199 USD ($285 CAD) and is scheduled to start shipping in January 2024. The official CCS1 Adapter from Tesla costs $345 USD.
