Tesla’s Giga Mexico Construction in Nuevo León Imminent: Governor
Governor of Nuevo León in Mexico, Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda, affirmed that all the necessary permits for the construction of Tesla’s Gigafactory in the municipality of Santa Catarina have been approved and are progressing well, reports Milenio.
In his update on Nuevo León’s economy, García indicated that the state and Elon Musk’s company could soon announce the commencement of the project.
“We do not have a date yet, but the good news is all the permissions regarding environment, energy, water, everything is checked off and progressing,” said García. “So at any moment we will announce the laying of the first stone.”
According to the Governor, the design stage of the electric vehicle that would be assembled in the factory is nearing its end. This is Tesla’s next-gen vehicle that will be made at Giga Mexico. He stated that upon completion of the design stage, work would begin on finalizing the production lines and other technological aspects.
The state authorities also boasted of Nuevo León’s leadership in job creation and foreign investment. García attributed this to the historic moment the state is experiencing in terms of economic development.
He highlighted that the state has been opening one or even two transnationals per week in 2023, with major companies like Tesla, Ternium, and KIA making substantial investments. Additionally, Nuevo León also leads in attracting Foreign Direct Investment, having captured $22,559 million since October 2021.
In terms of exports, Nuevo León is also at the forefront. Quarterly figures showed a 16.8% increase in local company exports, reaching $13,176 million from January to March 2023, as per data from INEGI.
